With God as our leader, the ULYSEES TURNER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND, Inc. has become more than a Scholarship Fund - we are a Scholarship Aid and have granted numerous scholarships ranging from $60 (our first scholarship) to over $2,500 for 53 years. These awards were given to outstanding Sunday School Youth of Lilydale 1st Baptist Church of Chicago, winners of Oratorical contests during the Sunday School Spring Festivals, the Cotillion/Beautillion or to deserving Chrisitan young people and educational organizations who were in dire need of financial support.
The Scholarship Fund, as a result of the Cotillion/Beautillion event, promotes camaraderie, team work, Christian fellowship, and ministering to the young participants. These qualities are evident in the participants’ change in attitude, self-esteem and motivation.
In August 2003, the ULYSEES TURNER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND, Inc. introduced another sector of its ever-growing sense of youth development - The Carolyn L. Browne Award. The award was created in memory of Mrs. Carolyn Browne who served as Sunday School teacher and pianist, assistant director of the Sunshine Band, church clerk typist and a member of the Mother’s Board. Carolyn was also a founding member of the ULYSEES TURNER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND, Inc. and was the daughter of Deacon Major W. Chatman and Mrs. Beatrice Chatman. Funding for the Carolyn Browne Memorial Scholarship Award is generously donated by her daughter, Mrs. Kimberly Davis.
We know we will be able to continue providing financial and spiritual guidance well into the future. With God and your continued prayers and sponsorship, we will be able to make sure the tradition continues.
